Pearls are organic gems, created when an oyster covers a foreign object
with beautiful layers of nacre. Long ago, pearls were important
financial assets, comparable in price to real estate, as thousands of
oysters had to be searched for just one pearl. They were rare because
they were created only by chance.
Today pearls are cultured by Man. Most cultured pearls; the familiar
white or white-rose colors, are produced in Japan. Highly lustrous,
larger then normal pewter to grey and many light to bright purple and
green tones are Tahitian pearls. Equally large silver-white, cream
-rose, deep gold, white or black are probably from Australia or
Indonesia and are know as South Sea Pearls. As for natural pearls - the
closest purely natural pearls you will find are freshwater pearls, known
for there exotic and free form shapes, are mainly from China and the
United States.
Cultured and natural pearls can be distinguished from
imitation ones by a very simple test. Take the pearl and rub it
(gently!) against the edge of a tooth. Cultured and natural pearls will
feel slightly rough, like fine sandpaper, because of the texture of
natural nacre. Imitations will feel as smooth as glass because the
surface is molded or painted on a smooth bead.

Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Remount
and Redesign
-
Unique and Custom creations are Voyagers specialty -
unlike most jewelers,
we do all work in house and are able to work with existing pieces to
make them "new" again from a good cleaning and polishing to adding
stones or reusing a part of the old design to create a new piece. This
ability to create brand new from scratch, innovative designs, to reusing
and redesigning existing pieces allows Voyagers to be your personal and
full service jewelers. We do free estimates for any design.
As
always, we recommend that you regularly have your jewelry checked &
inspected. We can do that while you wait ... as well as keep
your jewelry sparkling & clean.....
After cleaning, we
will check for any missing stones; inspect each stone for
tightness; and look for chips, nicks and breakage.
Prongs, shanks and mountings will be inspected for wear and cracks.
If repairs are needed, we will make suggestions and discuss possible
options with you.

Caring for Pearls
While pearls are remarkably resilient and
we recommend that they be worn as often as possible, these gems will
also respond to special care.
Occasionally clean the
pearls gently with mild soapy water or purchased pearl cleaning liquid.
Then rinse the cloth in fresh water and wipe the pearls
clean.
Dry them with a soft cloth.
Other tips to pearl care:
Wait until after applying makeup, perfume and
hairspray to put on the jewelry. As a rule put pearls on last when
dressing and take them off first when undressing.
Protect your pearls from rubbing against harder
gems / surfaces.
before putting pieces away, wipe with soft cloth.
For storage, keep pearl jewelry wrapped in a soft
cloth and protected from abrasive objects.
Strands will need restringing from
time to time. We recommend that you have your stands examined
annually by a jeweler.
